What Is Chiropractic Massage & How Can It Help Me?

You’ve heard of chiropractic adjustments, and you’ve heard of massage therapy, but what about chiropractic massage?

While some chiropractic providers offer massage therapy in their offices, not all offer chiropractic massage. This discipline is its own separate entity with different methods but similar goals to both massage therapy and chiropractic adjustments.

What Is Chiropractic Massage?

Chiropractic massage offers a combination of massage therapy and chiropractic care to help support whole spine and body health in the patient.

Your chiropractor uses traditional adjustments to release any subluxations that could be causing your pain and discomfort, as well as promoting healing to your muscle fibers and soft tissue. Massage is then used to help promote healing and wellness to the smaller systems of your body that may otherwise get forgotten during a chiropractic adjustment, such as your limbic and nervous systems.

Chiropractic adjustments focus on the hard tissue of the body, such as the vertebrae and joints of the spine, and massage focuses on the soft tissues, including muscle.

Whatever your goals for chiropractic treatment, utilizing chiropractic massage as part or all of your treatment plan can give you better, faster results and greater feelings of health and well-being.

How Is Chiropractic Massage Different from Massage Therapy?

While many of the techniques and methods used in both chiropractic massage and massage therapy are similar, chiropractic massage is a more complete, holistic approach to treatment.

The term “massage therapy” may conjure up thoughts of soft lighting, candles, aromatherapy, and calming music. Your chiropractor may use these items in your chiropractic massage therapy, but many choose not to.

In many cases, a chiropractic massage session will be conducted in the same appointment as a chiropractic adjustment. However, depending on how extensive your injury or problem, your chiropractor may suggest separate sessions of chiropractic adjustment and chiropractic massage.

What Conditions Is Chiropractic Massage Helpful for?

Chiropractic massage can help with a wide variety of conditions, giving you complete treatment and a better chance at a full recovery.

Some common conditions that are treated with chiropractic massage include:

Back Pain

Chronic back pain can be caused by subluxations of the spine, or by damaged muscle fibers. If you’ve suffered from back pain for a long time, your posture may change which can put stress on the muscles and soft tissues of your back, causing further pain and stiffness.

Treating the subluxations in your spine with a chiropractic adjustment and following up with treatment of the muscles and soft tissue through massage helps promote better blood flow to the damaged muscle fibers, speeding healing and decreasing inflammation and pain.

Pinched Nerves

There are a variety of ways you can develop a pinched nerve. Some injuries, such as those suffered in car accidents, can result in pinched nerves and pain. Subluxations of the spine also can cause nerves to become pinched.

By utilizing chiropractic care to realign the spine and release tense muscles, the initial cause of the pinched nerve can be corrected. Following that adjustment with massage therapy eases tense muscles and tissues, bringing relief and relaxation.

A major cause of tension headaches is tight muscles in the neck and shoulders. These tight muscles restrict blood flow to the brain, leading to the searing pain you experience when you have a headache.

A chiropractic adjustment can release the spine and heavily tense shoulder muscles that contribute to headaches. Coming in following an adjustment with massage on those neck and shoulder muscles promotes healthy blood flow to the brain, eases tension, and gives you a sense of relief from pain you may not have experienced in a long time.

Joint Pain

Aching, stiff joints are a common problem, especially for older adults. Whether the joint pain comes from arthritis, a lingering injury, or just the conditions of age, it can cause a decrease in mobility and enjoyment of daily activities.

Chiropractic adjustments can help correct the condition that lead up to the joint pain, such as a spinal misalignment that resulted in a posture adjustment and more pressure on certain joints. Massage can relieve the pain and tension in muscles surrounding the joint, increasing blood flow and decreasing inflammation that leads to pain.

What Happens During Chiropractic Massage?

In many cases, your chiropractic massage session will run concurrently with your regular chiropractic treatment.

Evaluation & Treatment Plan

Your chiropractic care will begin with a full medical history and intake to determine the type and severity of your pain, as well as the path forward with your treatment.

If you’ve had any imaging done prior to seeing a chiropractor, your chiropractor will review the images. If you haven’t had any X-rays taken, your chiropractor may ask you to get some to get a better idea of any underlying problems you may have.

At your first appointment, your chiropractor will discuss with you the type and severity of your pain, how long you’ve been dealing with it, your medical history, and your goals for treatment.

The chiropractor also will conduct a brief physical examination to check for any obvious problems as well as evaluate your range of motion.

Once the examination and intake are done, your chiropractor will develop a treatment plan that, if appropriate, will include chiropractic massage.

This treatment plan outlines your course and method of treatment, your goals, and any at-home exercises your chiropractor thinks will support your care.

Treatment can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on your condition and its severity. This treatment may mean you’re in the chiropractor’s office multiple times a week, especially if your chiropractor splits your adjustments and massage into separate sessions.

Your chiropractor will gently adjust your spine to release any subluxations and correct any major muscle problems. The adjustment then will be followed up, either in the same or a separate session, with a massage therapy session.

As you progress toward your goals, you move into maintenance phase.

At this stage, your treatments will decrease in frequency to once a month, or possibly even as you feel necessary. Adjustments and massage will still be performed, but the goal of these sessions is to support your healing and reduce the chances that you will re-injure yourself.

Will Insurance Cover Chiropractic Massage?

Whether chiropractic massage is covered by your medical insurance is dependent largely upon the conditions of your plan.

To be sure your chiropractic massage sessions will be covered, contact your insurance company before you begin treatment.

But chiropractic care also is beneficial for children, from infants all the way up to teens.

Finding the right chiropractor is key to getting the kind of care your child needs to get to full health and well-being.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Babies & Children?

When done correctly by an experienced, trained pediatric chiropractor, pediatric chiropractic care can be extremely beneficial for children of all ages.

Because children’s spines are smaller and more malleable than adult spines, most pediatric chiropractors use adjustable tables and adjustment techniques that put less pressure on young spines. These methods are designed to safely, gently release any subluxations that may be present, bringing your child’s spine into proper alignment and helping decrease symptoms from a variety of conditions.

When Should I Seek Pediatric Chiropractic Care for My Child?

Some families decide to take their child to see a pediatric chiropractor shortly after birth. Many others don’t begin to seek out chiropractic care for their children until a problem arises. Both choices are perfectly valid, and the decision on when to see a chiropractor is entirely up to you and your family.

Before seeking out chiropractic care, however, it’s best to discuss your desires with your child’s pediatrician. This is to help avoid taking a child to the chiropractor who may have a condition that could cause problems during chiropractic care.

What Conditions Can Pediatric Chiropractic Care Help My Child with?

As with adult chiropractic, pediatric chiropractic can help relieve aches and pains from a variety of conditions, including:

  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Neck pain

However, there are several conditions that occur more frequently in infants and children that chiropractic care can help with, including:

Some infants seem to cry and scream for hours on end without explanation. You may try feeding, changing, walking while carrying, or taking them for a ride in the car to no avail.

In many cases, this unexplained, near-constant crying is called colic.

While the exact cause of colic is not known, subluxations caused by birth trauma or another issue may lead to pain that causes your baby to cry. A skilled chiropractor can gently release these subluxations, hopefully easing your baby’s pain and decreasing crying.

Acid Reflux

Many babies experience acid reflux, which can cause spitting up and pain for your baby.

Changing your diet or the type of formula you feed your baby, as well as the frequency at which you burp during feedings and positioning for sleep or rest, can help decrease the problems that come with acid reflux.

However, because your baby is so small, misalignment of the spine can contribute to acid reflux, as your baby’s digestive system may be slightly out of place or restricted.

A chiropractor can help bring your baby’s spine back into alignment, correcting the positioning of the digestive system and easing the acid reflux symptoms.

Ear Infections

Ear infections and childhood seem to go hand-in-hand for many families. These can be marked by searing pain and discomfort, disrupted sleep, and crying.

If your child experiences frequent ear infections, the culprit could be some portion of the inner ear, such as the Eustachian tubes, being out of place.

By having a chiropractor work to realign your child’s spine and fix any potential tight muscles in the neck and shoulders, the inner ear can be brought back into its proper position and decreasing the frequency and severity of ear infections.

Strep Throat

A case of strep throat here and there is fairly common in childhood, especially as children enter school and become exposed to the germs of other children. But if your child suffers from chronic strep throat, that could be the sign of something else going on.

Everyone has streptococcus bacteria, but when the immune system isn’t working properly, that bacteria can take hold much more easily than in a healthy body.

Chiropractic care can restore balance to your child’s immune system, decreasing the frequency of infections caused by the streptococcus bacteria. That means fewer days of missed school and fewer doses of antibiotics!

As children grow, their spines must grow as rapidly as the rest of their bodies. However, that rapid growth can lead to a curvature of the spine during the growth spurts of puberty.

If left untreated, scoliosis could require your child to wear a brace or cast to correct the curvature, or even surgery for severe cases.

Visiting a chiropractor can be a supplement to bracing, or can help correct minor scoliosis curvatures that may not otherwise need treatment but instead simply impact your child’s posture.

Sports Injuries

Many children love to play sports. And, as they get older, the training and game play for those sports becomes more intense, with some young athletes practicing for hours per week.

When you pair heavy training with young, growing skeletal systems and muscles, sports injuries can be very common. From sprains and strains to stiff necks, sports injuries can sideline active kids for weeks.

Under the care of a chiropractor, your child’s recovery time can be decreased, their spine and muscles can be strengthened, and future injuries can be prevented.

How Will a Pediatric Chiropractor Treat My Child?

The treatment process for a pediatric chiropractic patient mirrors that of an adult patient, except you as a parent will be heavily involved in the treatment process. Your child will go through three stages of treatment: evaluation, treatment, and maintenance.

Evaluation & Treatment Plan

To figure out exactly what type of treatment your child needs, the chiropractor will take a full health history and gather more information about the source and type of their pain. This may include getting medical records from your child’s doctor.

In some cases, the chiropractor may order imaging to get a better understanding of your child’s difficulties, such as an X-ray.

During the initial appointment, the chiropractor will discuss with you, or your child if they are old enough to fully describe the issue, the type, severity, and frequency of pain or ill health. The chiropractor also may conduct an initial physical exam to see how much range of motion your child has.

Once your chiropractor has talked to you about the ongoing problem, a treatment plan will be developed. This plan is a living document that will be updated as your child’s treatment goes along. Your chiropractor may adapt this treatment plan to support the ultimate goal of your child’s treatment.

In addition, your chiropractor may give some at-home exercises that will support treatment. Be sure that your child does these exercises as recommended to get the most out of chiropractic care.

The treatment phase of your child’s care can last from a few weeks to several months, depending on the type and severity of their condition. Your chiropractor may ask to see your child a few times a week during this phase.

Your chiropractor will gently adjust your child’s spine to release any subluxations and repair any muscle damage that may be present. If your child’s problem is related to muscle damage, the treatment can help blood flow to muscle fibers and tissue, decreasing inflammation and promoting healing.

Once the initial condition has been largely corrected, your child will move into the maintenance phase of treatment.

At this point, the frequency of treatment will decrease, potentially once a month or as necessary.

The goal of the maintenance phase is to keep your child’s spine and body in proper alignment, keeping them healthy and growing well into the future.

Does Insurance Cover Pediatric Chiropractic Treatment?

The answer to this question depends largely upon the conditions of your health insurance plan.

Some health insurance plans provide coverage for pediatric chiropractic care without a referral and without specific health complaint. Others only cover chiropractic for certain conditions, or with a referral from a pediatrician.

Check with your insurance plan to determine if your child’s chiropractic care will be covered before starting treatment.
